Types of Intruder Alarms

Intruder alarms have a number of options in terms of how they activate. The different options may have an effect on insurance premiums and will also affect whether the system is able to achieve police response. The options are:

Audible only:

When this type of system is activated, the bell box and the internal sounder will be triggered, meaning the alarm is audible inside and outside of the property. GBSG install these systems to meet the NACOSS approved audible only standard.

Monitored:

Intruder/Fire alarm systems can be enhanced by connection to an Alarm Receiving Centre. In the event of an alarm system activating, signals are transmitted to the 24 hour, manned centre who would be instructed to contact nominated keyholders/police; recognised methods are;

  • A digital communicator, this equipment hooks a PSTN, telephone land line and dials an Alarm Receiving Centre when the alarm is set/unset, a daily test signal, when zones are omitted and in the event that the alarm is activated. It is recommended that a dedicated incoming calls barred telephone line is made available; this is to prevent someone dialling the telephone number, which would stop any signals being transmitted. It must be noted that you will incur quarterly billing for the BT line and the call charges with this means of signalling. Another feature that should be noted is if the telephone line is in use or the line is cut, the alarm system is reliant on the external sounder to raise the alarm.
  • Redcare Classic is a secure single path method of notification that connects an intruder alarm to an Alarm Receiving Centre. An analogue BT telephone line is required. The landline is constantly monitored, any interruptions the centre will notify your key holders. A coded data signal randomly interrogates the alarm to establish the state of the signalling path and the control panel, communication will take place irrespective of whether the landline is in use. The system will transmit signals when the alarm is set, un set, in an alarm condition, confirmation signals, when devices are omitted and when there are battery faults; with this means of monitoring you do not incur telephone call charges.
  • Redcare GSM is dual path notification with the same features of Redcare Classic, using an analogue BT telephone line as the primarily signalling path and backed up a radio pad utilising the O2 cellular telephone network as a secondary path.
  • Dualcom GPRS, This is a secure method of notification which incorporates multiple signalling paths. This equipment transmits via the Vodaphone GPRS network, PSTN telephone land line and/or IP/TCIP and provides high speed signalling for dedicated channels using the GPRS path. The equipment meets all insurance grades.
