For independent schools even relatively minor security incidents can have a significant and highly detrimental impact

Seven per cent of British children are educated at independent schools, and there are over 2,500 educational establishments to cater for this sector. Many of the students are from overseas, attracted by the United Kingdom’s exceptionally high standards.

However, a Home Office/University of Leicester report in 2005 stated that many schools were at risk from intruders. For independent schools the risks are intensified given the large number of prominent individuals who educate their children privately (including politicians, diplomats, and high net wealth individuals). For independent schools even relatively minor security incidents can have a significant and highly detrimental impact upon parent confidence, future student enrolments and ultimately upon the very survival of the school financially.

Physical protection needs to included as part of a school’s safeguarding policies and procedures. However, the security solutions developed need to be proportionate and appropriate. Very robust security that includes access control systems, CCTV coverage, and 24-hour monitoring can be implemented in a way that is discreet, well-designed, and reassures the school community while at the same time deterring criminals.

GBSG are specialists in security solutions for the independent school’s sector – we will be happy to advise your establishment.
