Common Security Mistakes Lincolnshire Homeowners Make and How to Avoid Them

Many of us have burglar alarms in our homes but it’s easy to overlook certain things that compromise the safety and protection of our property and our loved ones. Here are some common security mistakes that people make:

protect your family and avoid security mistakes

Forgetting to set the alarm

We have found that some of our customers forget to set their alarms regularly, especially when popping out of the house for a short period of time during the day. People also forget to set their alarms at bedtime when break-ins can occur while you are asleep.

Ensure you set your alarm EVERY time you leave your home and make it part of your bedtime routine too. You could use a smartphone app to remind you to activate it or that allows you to set it remotely.

Failing to update security codes

Using the same alarm code for years is a big no no. You’ve probably shared it with your dog walker or cleaner from 5 years ago or tradespeople, extended family etc. It is important, just like you do with your computer password that you also update your passcode.

You could put a reminder in your calendar to update the code every six months. Limit the number of people that have access to the code and consider unique codes for different members of the family or trusted members.

Neglecting regular maintenance and system checks

This is one of the main security mistakes people make. Security systems require regular maintenance to ensure all components like sensors, cameras and batteries are working properly. If you neglect this you risk your system becoming unreliable, annoying false alarms or restricted coverage.

It’s important to schedule regular maintenance checks with your alarm provider annually. Address any error messages or system notifications immediately.

Overlooking secondary entrances

Many of us focus on our front doors but overlook other entry points like back doors, side doors, windows and garage entrances. Burglars will exploit these less secure points.

Ensure all entry points are adequately protected. Install locks and sensors on all doors and windows and consider motion detectors or cameras near secondary entrances. Review your home’s perimeter regularly for potential vulnerabilities – broken fences, overgrown trees blocking views and providing privacy for intruders.

Not updating security technology

Many alarm systems are out of date and it is worth considering an update that can offer remote monitoring, integration with your home devices and advanced detection technology.

You should consider upgrading your system every 5 years or so to take advantage of new features like smart alarms, video doorbells and AI based surveillance cameras that can detect suspicious behaviour.

Insufficient outdoor lighting

Outdoor lighting has always been a great deterrent. Intruders don’t want to be seen. Poor placement of lighting or lighting that is too dim reduces effectiveness and is a common security mistake.

We recommend using motion activated lights for key areas around your property like entrances, pathways and garages, sheds and outbuildings.

You could also consider installing smart lighting that can be controlled remotely to create the illusion that someone is at home.

Leaving valuables in sight

Too many people make security mistakes by leaving handbags, wallets and car keys on window sills, by front doors or on surfaces that can easily be seen from outside.

When you get home, make a habit of putting your valuables in a safe place away from view.

Summary

Home security is about a lot more than just installing an alarm system. It relies on you developing good security habits, remembering to always set your alarms, be vigilant and prepared. You should also consider using multiple methods of security, maybe adding perimeter fencing, surveillance cameras, electronic gates and bollards.
